Abstract

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) plants are used to harvesting the solar energy to meet the growing energy
demands, energy security and decarbonisation. As the PV system becomes inexpensive, large scale
PV systems are installed and integrated into smart grid across the world. Such integration necessitates
day-ahead solar PV power prediction as it is essential to ensure reliable power supply. However, Solar
PV power forecasting is complex since it heavily depends on weather conditions. In literature, many
methods have been developed for accurate prediction of Solar PV power in the last few decades. This
paper presents a comprehensive survey on Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for predicting PV
power output. It explains the principles of AI methods and analyzes their merits and demerits.
Furthermore, it discusses the various metrics for evaluating the performance of the prediction
methods. It also presents some open issues for future research.
