Religious Tradition of Dibangiya Deoris Of Assam: A Study of Continuity and Change

Abstract

The paper is a syncretic study of the religious tradition of Dibangiya Deoris who inhabit nine districts of Upper Assam along with other communities. The study gives centrality to continuity and change in their faith and beliefs, including representation of deities, and practices. It also tries to understand two way exchanges with reference to a few beliefs and practices prevalent in both Deori and Hindu traditions. Primarily, the study is descriptive in nature, and is based on field investigation. It is premised over natural interactive process among neighbouring communities in particular which is a characteristic process in making Indian civilisation.
