Self-Control (Self-Hisbah) or Introspection Among Staff in Zakat Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

Abstract

Islamic-based development institutions, especially in Malaysia, are thriving. In fact, some have been known on the international stage. Of course, the staff played a significant role in successfully bringing the institutions to that level. The question is, in the seriousness of the institutions achieving success, is the spiritual side of the staff, especially the aspect of self-control (self-hisbah) or introspection also developed as the institution grows? This article focuses on staff in Zakat Pulau Pinang (ZPP) as this institution has undergone a process of rebranding under the corporate name during 2012 and became one of the Islamic-based development institutions that plays an important role as a socio-economic institution that manages the collection and distribution of zakat for the well-being of Muslims in Penang. Therefore, this study aims to identify, analyze and formulate of self-control (self-hisbah) or introspection among ZPP staff. This study uses a non-experimental study design and uses secondary and primary source data. Secondary data were obtained through document review while primary data were collected through the distribution of questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis methods and statistical inference analysis through IBM SPSS. The findings of the study concluded that differences in age and level of education of ZPP staff did not affect the self-control (self-hisbah) or introspection practice by ZPP staff.
