Abstract

Due to the rapid increase in vehicles, the traffic problems have increased in the last few years. As a result, emergency services like ambulance service are often getting delayed. The crucial issue is the smooth motion of emergency vehicles such as ambulances, rescue vehicles, fire brigade, and police through the intersection of traffic during peak hours. The purpose of the proposed work is to identify the shortest possible route with less number of traffic signals for the emergency vehicles to reach the spot on time. In the proposed research work, for an emergency vehicle like ambulance, the route to hospital from the accident spot is decided based on the traffic signals in its enroute via Open Street Map (OSM). Also, the control of traffic lights in the path of travel is enabled from the ambulance itself before few meters distance, so that clearance in the path is achieved. Open Street Map (OSM) is an open source tool employed in this project that gives the geographic information as primary data. This information is fed to the PIC microcontroller that activates the traffic signals at a distance of 100m in the traffic lane using RF communication system. It has been found that time constraint of the emergency vehicle is thereby reduced to large possible extent.
