Abstract

Every industry has machineries with controls to perform the process such as melting, drilling, refining etc., These
controls greatly concerns the reliability, energy efficiency and power quality problems in the industrial network. The
harmonics existing in the industries leads the interruption of supply, revenue loss and the product in poor quality.
The other concern on power factor correction satisfying the statutory requirement by the utility also causing adverse
effects due to resonance in the consumer and utility network. In the literature, different investigations are presented
on the issue of harmonics and its mitigation technique. However, there is no enough review has been performed on
the issue of harmonics penetration in every industrial facility (IF). This paper surveys the impacts of harmonics like
malfunction of relay, failure of capacitors, excessive heating machines, surge arrestors explosion etc., relative to IF.
Moreover, the determined causes due to the loads used in facilities such as arc furnace, induction furnace, electrical
submersible pumps, roll mill, drilling machine and other manufacturing units assessed. In addition, the solution
techniques for mitigating harmonics in various industrial facilities are consolidated in this paper. And also the
impacts of harmonics and its mitigations for the industries having grid voltage below and above 33 kV are analysed
for the performance comparison of various harmonics filters. This enables the user to extend the study on utility side
with the function of filters.
