The Study of Music through NonDialogue Animated Features

Abstract

Since the early days of animation, music has play a crucial role in adding an emotional value
to a storyline of an animated film. The aims of this study was to produce a short animation
that portrayed the visualization of music in animation without using a verbal conversation as
a method of storytelling and to study the application of music in animation, it’s importance
and function. An animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse (2018) directed by Peter
Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, and Rodney Rothman were studied as it portrayed a similar use of
music visualization. A Japanese animated film titled A Silent Voice or Koe no Katachi
(?????) directed by Naoko Yamada were used as it portrayed a similar type of
disability as one of the character from a sort film that will be produced –Fermata. This study
was started with the idea that body language, music visualization and sign language can be
used in an animation to effectively portrayed character from Deaf Community. The visual
development, music visualization, technique and thematic will be examined to gain insights
how this animated film successfully produced and it is hoped that this research can be used as
a reference for future study.
