Abstract

The need for compact and high performance antenna is increasing due to the growth in modern communication technologies. The recent trend is the design of antenna for 5G applications with high gain and directivity. The presented paper investigates an Inset Fed Microstrip Patch Antenna (IFMPA) with Defected Ground Structure (DGS) of dimension 28.5 x 28.5 mm2   . The proposed antenna operates at 2.58 GHz midband spectrum as well 3.5 GHz / Sub-6 5G band vwith observed total gain of 5.2 dB and efficiency of 95%. The IFMPA with DGS consists of microstrip patch and metamaterial based defected ground designed to radiate at Sub-6 GHz band and to achieve miniaturization and high performance. The return Loss of -14.99 dB and Voltage Standing Wave ratio (VSWR) of 1.43, observed at resonance frequency of 3.5 GHz proves the proposed structure as suitable candidate for Sub–6 GHz, 5G applications. The investigated structure is designed using High Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS) and performance is validated by comparing the simulated result with a fabricated prototype.
