Abstract

- e-Health, an electronic form of healthcare uses the advanced information and communication
technology within healthcare environments. Authentication and integrity verification of the important medical
data is one of the major challenges in the e-Health platform. Proper verification of patients with associated
medical images or data is crucial to conduct accurate medical diagnosis. A watermarking based security
framework is proposed to address the issues of authentication and integrity verification of medical images for
e-Health applications. In this paper the electronic patient record (EPR) used as watermark is encoded using
Arnold transform and is embedded on the retinal fundus images (consisting of healthy and diseased images),
using a hybrid watermarking technique. The hybrid watermarking technique integrates the Integer wavelet
transform (IWT) and histogram bin shifting. Automated diagnosis of Glaucoma from the embedded retinal
fundus image is performed to show the possibility of a high level of security for medical images. Moreover,
the correct recovery of the EPR from the watermarked images makes the framework applicable to the
authentication of medical images for a computer based automated diagnostic system in an e-Health
environment
