Abstract

This research intended to develop and validate instruments to identify the extent to which social support influences youth leisure activities and in turn, impacts the well-being of youth’s life. The steps for the development of this instrument were based on the framework of Amsterdam Public Health (2020) which covers six steps that must be done. The process of instrument development began with the determination of constructs, sub-constructs and indicators that passed the content validity process by experts as well as face validity. Validity is associated with the ability of the instrument to measure what should be measured and, allows the interpretation of appropriate scores. Then, the data obtained was used to draw appropriate conclusions. Next, a pilot study was conducted involving 101 youths around the Klang Valley. Validity and reliability of the social support and leisure activities towards well-being instrument was tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The purpose of factor analysis used in this study was to refine the questionnaire according to the construct by reducing the number of items contained in it through statistical techniques of data reduction so that the resulting new questionnaire had a smaller coherent subscale. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) should be used as a data reduction technique to reduce the number of items to several factors so that the items can be summarised in that factor. The results of the analysis discovered that all the components of the sub-constructs for the three constructs of social support, leisure activities and well-being were following the sub-constructs of this research. There were only four items dropped in the instrument. The outcomes of these conclusions confirmed that the questionnaire instrument developed was authentic and suitable for use for actual data collection. This instrument is the intellectual property of the researcher that will be registered later.
