Roots and Identity Of Sonowal Kachari Tribe: An Integral Part of North-East Indian Literature

Abstract

In order study about culture and society of a specific tribe, one can find Literature as an important media. North-East Indian Literature has always been playing an important role being established itself in a position among the great literature of the world. The writers (both tribal and non-tribal) from North-East India use to write various articles, short stories, poems, novels etc., on the lives of the indigenous tribes of North-Eastern region of India. Their writings are well reflections of their lands and people. However this article has made an attempt to discuss about the roots and identity of of Sonowal Kachari Tribe, an integral part of North-East Indian Literature.

Keywords:Culture, Identity, Literature, North-East India, Sonowal Kachari Tribe North-East Indian literature has witnessed the emergence of a good number of literary works on the life and society of different tribes, and its reflection is well appreciated in Assamese literature too (written in both Assamese and English languages, and some are English translations).          Since earlier period of time people have been realizing the need of expressing their culture and society through the field of literature. Indeed literature is observed as a prime media which carries the identities, and cultures of the people and their societies throughout the generations.          We find some significant works of North-East Indian Literature based on the tribal society and culture, like Rajanikant Bordoloi’s Miri Jiyori on the Missing tribe, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya’s Iyaruingam (Love in the Time of Insurgency) on the life of Tankhul Naga in Manipur, Pushupati Bharadwaj’s Simsangor Duti Paar on Garu tribe, Rong Bong Terang’s Rongmilir Hahi on Karbi people, and so on    However a few works are discovered in the form of monographs, articles, compilations, and research                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      papers on the life and culture of Sonowal Kacharis, who claim to be one of the aboriginal tribes of North-East India.
