Entrepreneurship and Family Business: Do Conflict Resolution and Communication in the Family Influence Entrepreneurs’ Motivation?

Abstract

Family businesses are those business ventures where the ownership and management are concentrated within a
family unit. In such businesses, the two or more members of a family influence the financial decisions and
exercise a lot of control on the company.The capital for the family entrepreneurial business is from the
family members who also take roles and responsibilities to execute. Many factors influence family
entrepreneurship. The family embeddedness in the entrepreneur can be successful when care is taken to
have less conflict, ensure good communication etc. In the cross sectional study, purposive sampling method
was used to select 33entrepreneurial families. The study examines whether Family conflict resolution and
Family communication patterns influenceon the entrepreneurial families’ Motivation.Online survey was
conductedusing three standardized tools -Family Conflict Resolution Scale,Family Communication Patterns
Questionnaire, and Entrepreneurial Motivation Scale. The family conflict resolution, family
Communication Patterns, and entrepreneurial motivationof the entrepreneurial families were measured.
Then the authors have examined whether the two independent variables - Family conflict resolution
andFamily communication patterns - predict the entrepreneurial motivation. Descriptive and Inferential
statistics-Linear regression were done for analysis.The independent variables – Family conflict resolution and
Family communication patterns are predictors of entrepreneurial motivation of the entrepreneurial families.
