Abstract

This study entails the Southern Thailand conflict which have gone through a tremendous tide of highs and lows since it spurred in the early 20th century. In fact, the conflict could be traced back since 1786 due to the fall of the Patani Sultanate and it prolonged without a concrete resolution to resolve it until the present day. The purpose of this study is to analyse the reasons behind this conflict that went unresolved utilising the Hensel, Mitchell, Thomas and Thyne model on international conflicts based on tangible and intangible values. In conclusion, by understanding the real political nexus-security issues based on the above constructed simple model, it would be leading to the next level in solving the conflict in Southern Thailand. It is also recommended that the play-role of the Malaysian government should be given a broader mandate as a mediator in order to contribute towards a more constructive effort in the approach of drafting a conflict resolution that is acceptable to all parties involved.
