Abstract

Nowadays, various traffic problems such as traffic congestion, emergency vehicles
being stuck in traffic, traffic rule offenders disrupt the daily lives of road users. The road users
encounter problems such as wastage of time on roads for waiting in traffic, getting delayed on
emergency purposes, several health problems like air and noise pollution. These problems are
being handled manually by traffic authorities. Managing these problems simultaneously by a
person is a tedious and time-consuming process. The solution to aid manual handling is
proposed by using a single shot detector (SSD) to detect the object. With the information
processed through object detection, a working model is placed on the traffic surveillance that
will automatically change the traffic lights based on the vehicle count and appearance of an
emergency vehicle. Moreover, traffic violators will be captured through the camera in the
proposed model. The combined system consists of a capturing device i.e. a camera and a
controller for processing and controlling the traffic signal and a power supply to run the system.
The current traffic frame from the web camera is processed by the controller for obtaining the
required information.
