Abstract

This study presents a knowledge-based system for the identification of graduation project tasks timely and applies the control measures effectively. The advisement process plays an essential role in a student’s graduation project competency. This study develops an expert system to advise students in graduation project. The proposed prototype is important to improve the quality of student advisement, so that to improve student’s graduation project competency. The proposed system simplifies the task of advisement, improves the quality of student advisement and gives a possible opportunity to students. Additionally, the system can reduce the human advisor workload and enable the students to plan their project, schedule, and estimating the effort required for the project. As a result, it can increase student confidence in graduation project and assure quality education. Semi-structured interviews, observation and focus group discussions have been used as a data collection strategy. Purposive sampling technique has been used to select key informers of participants.

The system aims to provide a guide for computing science students in their graduation project activities and facilitate the advisement process. The system is developed using SWI prolog programming language and java for interface. The developed prototype uses backward chaining to infer rules and provide appropriate recommendations. The prototype was evaluated by using user acceptance test and the performance of proposed the knowledge-based system has achieved good acceptance by the system evaluators. The system has been registered overall performance 87.43%. The system is advising its fact but not fully update rules as well, which left for other research.
