Abstract

Inconel 718, a Ni-based superalloy is a widely used superalloy due to its magnificent mechanical and chemical properties at high temperatures and comparatively low cost with other alloys. However, the mechanical properties and intricately shaped components often make machining of this superalloy difficult. The Inconel 718 are extensively used in the aircraft, nuclear, space industry, automotive and medical industries etc. due to unwavering metallurgical and structural variations and exceptional thermal resistant properties even at high temperatures. This review article serves the purpose of study of the machining characteristics, properties of Inconel 718 alloy and microstructural behaviour at optimal combinations using traditional machining processes as well as electrical discharge machining.
