Abstract

Abstract: This article deals with the political, social and cultural changes that took place in Uzbekistan in the second half of the 1980s in the former Soviet Union, and highlights the growing awareness of national identity among Uzbek intellectuals and the status of Uzbek as the state language. The role of the Uzbek language in the socio-political life of that time and the situation that arose to increase its legal status were also studied. The factors that led to the decline of the official status of the Uzbek language and its decline to the level of everyday language are analyzed. Attempts to give Uzbek the status of the state language have been described. The article gives examples of the attitude of the Soviet government to the process of national identity in the colonial republics, as well as conspiracies against the activities of intellectuals in Uzbekistan to restore the legal status of the national language, the struggle of state and party bodies against them. It was also stated that the activities to raise the status of the national language are not related to nationalism, but rather respect for other languages ??and the importance of learning multiple languages.
