Abstract

Dams have great importance as a result to increase in the extent of their utilization in generating electricity and controlling flood water. The safety of these facilities is very important and failure of this source generates high losses in the economy and life. Earthquakes are one of the most important of these influences, as current study relied on a review of the most important previous literature to clarify the effect of earthquakes on the stability of dams as a result of damages within the dam's body due to the occurrence of tension strains that work to crack the dam as well as stresses that should be obtained within the permissible limits, otherwise it will lead to gravity dam body failure. As well as the occurrence of sliding of the gravity dam's body over the foundation, thereby causing a horizontal displacement of crest when these earthquakes occur, and the additional water pressure generated as a result of these earthquakes will cause hydrodynamic pressure that generates a cycle of increase in the values ??of tensile stresses and pressure applied to the face of the dam. All these influences and behaviors will have an effect on the instability of gravity dam if they are not carefully studied and taken into consideration when engineering the dams located within the seismic zone.
