Abstract

This research paper attempts to prove that the employment of implicated propositions yield a pregnant text that accepts a number of explanations. Thus, it is the addressee’s role to recognize the intended meaning of the addresser. Therefor, it focuses on such problems as how is it possible to comprehend propositions that are communicated implicitly, and if they could be detected, then how to determine the correct implicature that is intended by the addresser. Furthermore, it investigates the extent to which intentions and other pragmatic factors are said to be involved in interpreting the addresser’s implied meaning.

It is hypothesized that what is implicated is depended one what is said, it expresses a rather different level of interpretation. It is believed that the addressee must be able to determine the implicatures, so as to reach the intended meaning of the addresser.

The paper is formed of three sections. Section one discusses some notions of meaning, sematic and pragmatic. Section two deals with the concept and types of implicature. Section three is devoted to the notion of explicature.

Among many other conclusions, the work reached the conclusion that implicature falls within the domain of pragmatics, while explicature the subject of compositional semantics since they represent the literal meaning of a proposition.
