Landscape Elements for Sustainable Environment and Housing Satisfaction: Million Plus cities of India

Abstract

Housing is a place where people spend time with family, interact with neighbors and do various
relaxing activities together. People living in the cities have a desire to connect with nature. Open space in
housing premises provided with landscape elements gives pleasing visual and opportunity for recreation
activities leading to sustainable environment and housing satisfaction. Thus, the importance of landscapes
elements can have a major influence on sustainable environment and people’s housing satisfaction living in
the million plus cities of India.
This paper emphases importance of the landscape elements as they help in enhancing sustainable
environment and housing satisfaction. This paper identifies the landscape elements through literature review,
further categorizes and rank them for sustainable environment and housing satisfaction through focus group
discussions. The questionnaire survey of experts and residents, was conducted to determine the importance
of landscape elements for sustainable environment and housing satisfaction through statistical analysis. The
paper presents the ranking of different landscape elements for enhancing sustainable environment and
housing satisfaction of residents living in million-plus cities through statistical analysis. Identifying the
landscape elements at open spaces in housing shall assist architects, planners, and developers for developing
housing project that may enhance housing satisfaction of the residents.
