CINEMA VS NETFLIX: IS THIS A WAR IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY?

Abstract

In this modern age rapid technological development gives audience various entertainment media
that not only change conventional cinema, but also expand access to movies from internet and mobile
technology. The disruptive technology has changed the way business is done and created a threat to
traditional business. The existence of video-on-demand streaming services has created the question of the
sustainability of traditional cinema. This paper investigates whether there are differences in terms of
customer experience, acceptance of technology in relation with perceived usefulness and ease-of-use, that
influence satisfaction difference between offline media and online media such as video on demand
streaming services (in this case Netflix). Data was collected from a total of 223 male and female respondents
and analyzed by PLS-SEM. The results showed that there were no differences in behavior among video on
demand and cinema watchers in terms of customer experience, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of
use on satisfaction and continuance intentions in Jakarta. The results in this paper will help practicioners to
understand about the factors that influence consumers’ need to enjoy movies on both offline and online
entertainment media.
