Abstract

Mutual funds have been in existence in India since 1963, despite its existence for over 50 years the
participation into this medium of investing has not been encouraging. The participation of investors into mutual
fund investing in India is abysmally low compared to other countries which can be attributed to lack of
awareness and low level of financial literacy. With interest rates of traditional instruments such as fixed
deposits, recurring deposits and post office savings going down over the years choosing equity mutual funds has
not remained to be a choice, but a necessity. Mutual fund houses design different categories of equity mutual
funds that are to meet specific investment objectives of different risk profiles of investors. It becomes
imperative for common individual investors to understand the importance of equity mutual funds as part of their
investment portfolio. Investors can attain superior returns compared to traditional asset classes and also beat
inflation by choosing right categories of mutual funds by choosing longer investment horizons. The objective of
