Comprehensive Framework of 5S Implementation: A Guidance for Industries

Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive framework of 5S implementation as guideline for industries to
manage their work environment better and better that focused to cleanness, efficiency, standardization, and
elimination of wastes. As we know that 5S was called housekeeping management system and stand for Seiri,
Seiso, Seiton, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke. 5S has been implemented in various industries over the world, including
Indonesia. We believed that 5S is comprehensive approach for industries to get better performances in quality,
efficiency, productivity, and safety. Comprehensive implementation will be involved eight steps, i.e. establish a
5S steering committee, define a 5S implementation plan, launch communications campaign, provide 5S training
and education, start 5S pilots project, mass rollout, conduct 5S audits, and finally review and improve. 5S
implementation in industries needs big effort, not only supported by technology but also human as key of
driver. Commitment and communication are important factors that must be considered in order to implement 5S
effectively and consistently.
