Abstract

This study focused on the teaching and learning of writing in Bahasa Melayu using the animated cartoon of Upin and Ipin at primary school level. This study aimed to explain the student’s achievement in answering the writing question for Bahasa Melayu during pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was based on excerpts and the post-test was based on the animation series of Upin and Ipin. The descriptive comparative analysis was conducted to identify the differences in terms of students’ achievements. This study used the Constructive Theory (1987) to examine teachers’ and students’ roles in constructing essays in Bahasa Melayu in primary schools. In addition this study involved 32 respondents among students of Year 5 in one Orang Asli primary school in Perak. Elements of multimedia in Upin and Ipin animated cartoon was identified as one of the most effective ways to capture primary school students’ interests during the teaching and learning process especially in constructing essays in Bahasa Melayu. Research findings revealed that students were more confident in constructing quality essays compared to conventional approaches (using texts, pictures) and this is evident through the comparative marks analysis obtained from the pre-test and post-test obtained.
