Abstract

— Investors planning for installations of wind turbines, show a great interest to know the wind
conditions on site to optimize plants and to determine the expected energy yields. The statistical distribution
of the wind velocities vary from place to place and depends on the local climatic conditions, the landscape
and ground surface form. It is not sufficient to consider only the mean annual wind speed, because higher
wind speeds, have a greater impact on the energy that can be extracted from the wind when considered with
lower wind speeds. Therefore, a more differentiated statement about the wind conditions at a location can be
obtained via the frequency distribution of the wind speed. To study the characteristics of wind we have
proposed a new mathematical model using three parameter mixed Weibull distribution. Using the proposed
distribution we have estimated the parameters using a few analytical methods. To find the best fit of the
distribution statistical tests like RMSE, Chi-Square and
2 R
are used. The capacity factor and expected power
from the turbine are calculated which may help the manufacturers to design the turbine
