Abstract

Introduction: The difference in interpretations of the process of cognition in different philosophical and worldview systems is noted. The purpose of this article is to analyze the work of C. Castaneda from the point of view of his understanding of the problems of epistemology. Proceeding from this, the research tasks have been defined.

Materials and methods: The object and subject of research are indicated. The characteristics of the primary sources are provided. Among the main research methods the method of studying primary sources, historical, logical, and axiological methods are selected. The choice of these methods has been substantiated on the grounds of the object and subject of the research, as well as the characteristics of the primary sources.

Results: Don Juan's personality as an adherent to the system of cognition associated with the culture of the Yaqui Indians is defined. Attention is drawn to the features that should be taken into account when considering the studied ways of knowing the world. The concept of "separate reality", being the object of cognition in the teachings of Don Juan, is characterized. The reasons related to the absence of the tradition of written (sign-oriented) fixation of this teaching are analyzed. Peculiarities of the learning process and the conditions which determine the choice of a student by an adherent of this teaching are distinguished. The structure of cognitive activity and the main stages of the cognitive process within the framework of the study of cognition are demonstrated.

Discussion and conclusion: The author's vision of the practical significance and relevance of this research for a modern human is given. In this regard, the following aspects are highlighted and analyzed: the moral impeccability of a subject striving to cognize the essence of the world; stimulating the search for ways to solve the main problems of modern civilization; equality of value systems, and worldviews that exist in the modern world.
