Abstract

- Disc brake technology has lately found extensive use in vehicle braking systems. In light of the extreme conditions of use, brake rotors are required to come with an optimal balance of the different part properties. Work has been presented on the study of materials suitable for manufacturing brake rotors, coming with a mix of apt wear resistance, strength, toughness, and machinability aspects. Unconventional manufacturing technologies of Jet Machining and Laser Cutting have been studied for minimal effects on material properties, parallelly suiting the purpose and satisfying the constraints. With regard to the observed two-directional flow of stress, the design is then developed using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with the associated data values that have been acquired from a pre-installed test system. Relevant calculations have been worked upon to present the structural as well as thermal stability of the proposed design. With a growing commercial value of the disc brake technology and concerns for sound engineering practices, pad wear has come as an associated drawback which can be reduced by adopting the discussed fillet-based design which eliminates the encountered sharp edge of the respective cut-outs.
