Tempting Sweet Mango of Guimaras: Exploring the Supply and Demand of the Mango Industry

Abstract

This study determined the status of the mango industry and analysed the underlying factors that affects the drop and increase of the supply and demand of mangoes in the five municipalities in the province of Guimaras, Philippines. The respondents of the study were mango traders in the province of Guimaras as listed in the registered business under the Department of Trade and Industry - Guimaras. This study utilized the descriptive research design and data required for the study were gathered using a survey questionnaire duly validated by the experts. The questionnaire was subjected to reliability validation by a faculty of the College of Agriculture at the Guimaras State College Baterna Campus. Respondents were classified according to age, sex, civil status, monthly income, and business capital. The data were gathered, tabulated and subjected to statistical analyses with the aid of computers’ Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software (SPSS). The major findings of the study were, majority of the mango traders are 38 to 47 years old and female dominantly the mango traders, most of the traders are married and have undergone college with an average monthly income of ?20,001 to ?45,000 and business capital of more than ?30,000. The supply of mango industry in Guimaras is low and the demand is high. The factor that mostly affects the supply and demand of the mango industry is the season. Conducting lectures/seminars about mangoes is the best strategic option or intervention to improve the mango industry in Guimaras.
