Investigation on Performance Enhancement of Rooftop PV System Using HOMER Tool

Abstract

This paper investigates the simulation study and implementation of the optimum tilt angle and orientation of Rooftop Photovoltaic system for maximum utilization of solar energy, tested at University campus located in South Indian state of Tamilnadu. In this case study, five different tilt angles 10°, 15°, 20°, 30° and 40° are taken for analysis and two geographical orientations (North-East and South-East) are considered under the tropical climate conditions. Testing and analysis is carried using the HOMER simulation tool and results are verified in a 5kW PV system located at Control and Instrumentation block of Electrical and Electronics Engineering department building having a roof space of 112 square meters. The test result shows that there is a substantial increase in the power generation around 4 to 10 percentage per year by upgrading the existing RTPV system to best possible tilt angle and orientation. The results also confirmed that CO2 emission was controlled around 72 kg per year due to increase in power yield and also a reduction in the electricity bill amount of the campus.
