Abstract

With the benefits of being plentiful and non-pollutant in nature, the sources of renewable energy have attained broad concentration This paper first reviews number of Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques for extracting both wind power and solar photovoltaic (PV) power in such a way to develop a hybrid wind-PV power generation system. This hybrid system complements each other from day to night to facilitate continuous output power. Then, a new MPPT technique is proposed for extracting the Maximum power with the use of a newly developed hybrid optimization algorithm, namely Cuckoo-Firefly (CFF) algorithm. The CFF algorithm is obtained from the integration of Cuckoo search algorithm (CSA), and the Firefly optimization algorithm (FFA). In addition, the proposed system consists of a Proportional Integral controller (PI) controlled LUO converter that involve in controlling the power given to the load. The LUO converter can either step up or step down the output depend on the requirement of load. The study of the proposed system is done in MATLAB/Simulink platform. The experimental outcomes show that the proposed system is effective in extracting the MPP from the hybrid power system.
