Abstract

Bharati Mukerjee is one of the well known Iindian born American diasporic writers. Life of
Immigrant is the fore most concept in her most of the novels. Desirable daughters comprises the story of
three sisters namely Padma, Parvathi and Tara,the narrator of this novel. Self Identity and feministic thought
are the major themes in Bharati Mukerjee novels.
Identity separates us from everyone else and while one may be very similar to another there is no one who is
exactly like you; someone who experienced exactly what you have felt and the way you do about subjects
and reacts the same to the events and experiences you have had. A person’s identity can be judged by the
self-conception as well as their social presentation.
This novel comprises the story of Tara and her sisters Padma, Parvathi and Tara Lata of legendery
women.Tara chaterjee is the character of searching her identity throughout the novel as the background of
Calcatta Bramin family. She is the identity crisis of American migrant and Calcatta Bramin.Padma elder
sister lives in New Jersey and leading respectable and responsible life. Her identity and character is being
spoiled by Christopher Dey.
This paper deals with the search of identity of Tara Chaterjee, and her sisters and TaraLata of legendary tree
bride. Tara the youngest of three sisters is in struggle between Indian Hindu culture and American modern
culture.
