Documentation of Plants Used for Postnatal Care by Temuan Community in Taman Negara Johor Gunung Ledang

Abstract

Heritage conservation of especially traditional knowledge from the aboriginal people are highly important
nowadays. Postnatal care is one of the among traditional practices inherited from generations to generations.
However, the postnatal practices vary from cultures and races. Therefore, the aim of this study is to document the
traditional knowledge of Temuan community in Taman Negara Johor Gunung Ledang of plants used during
postnatal care treatment. Three villages of Temuan community in Taman Negara Johor Gunung Ledang were
evaluated and the data were compared between these three villages. There were 15 informants including Tok Batin
and experienced mothers. It was found that 18 species of plants from 14 families of plants were recorded based on
14 types of ailment. Among these species, Homalomena rostrata, Zingiber officinale and Peliosanthes teta received
the highest fidelity level of 100%, 100% and 75%, respectively. Thus, the data give an indication that there are
plants that are essential in the postnatal care treatment in the Temuan community based on the ethnobotanical
indices (Fidelity Level) used. Hence, this documentation of traditional knowledge can contribute to the heritage
conservation in which is essential to our younger generations.
