Methods of Resolving Conflicts Adopted by the Hotel Staff

Abstract

Hotel employees have multiple conflicts on a daily basis that result in varying levels of occupational stress. The consequences of occupational conflict not only affect psychologically, physiologically, and socially but are also detrimental to those they interact with during their workday. Conflict is inevitable in any human institution. Conflict when not resolved early can turn people into enemies or strain peaceful relationship and make it difficult. This made researcher interested in assessing methods of resolving conflict adopted by the Hotel staff. Descriptive research design was used for conducting the present study. The sample size of the study consisted of 120 employees from 30 hotels of Vadodara City. The questionnaire was used as an instrument to gather the information from the respondents. High extent of conflicts were observed among of the respondents (6o.7%)  due to more workload than other colleagues, manager gives preferential treatment to certain employees only (62.5%), ideas are rejected which lead to differences in opinion  (60.0%), decisions and opinion is not valued (60.8%), and difference in amount in salary (48.5%) which created conflicts between staffs. Various methods of resolving conflicts were used by the respondents. The investigator hopes that the finding of the study will be useful to hotel management and others concerned. It is also hoped that this study will enable administrators and policy makers to adopt suitable measures to help employees alleviate their interpersonal conflict and avoid strain and to make them more satisfied in their jobs so that they can provide better outcomes.
