Abstract

This paper presented application of a new variant of Ant Lion Optimization Algorithm (ALO) to obtain the optimal allocation of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) for enhancing the power system loadability, voltage stability and minimizing the active and reactive power loss of transmission system. A multi objective optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem with Ant Lion Optimization Algorithm (ALO) has been formulated for optimizing the above three objectives by obtaining the optimal location of the UPFC while maintaining the system security and power stability, e.g., Voltage Profile, Active & Reactive Power Losses. The projected technique has been adopted to IEEE 30 bus test system. The results have been compared and analyzed with non dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA) method in literature. The obtained values prove that the ALO algorithm is competent and can be used practically to find the optimal location of FACTS devices (UPFC) in deregulated power system. Results demonstrate that the static and dynamic performance of the power system can be effectively enhanced by the optimal allocation of the UPFC by reducing the power flow losses. This comparison confirms the effectiveness of the installing UPFC by proposed ALO method for relieving congestion.
