The Leadership in Sangha Governance in ASEAN Community

Abstract

This research paper focuses on 1) studying the principle and importance of leadership for
Sangha governance in the ASEAN community,2) studying Buddhist doctrine to promote the leadership,
and 3) presenting the leadership knowledge of Sangha governance in the ASEAN community, a case of
Thailand and Cambodia. The research methodology was qualitative research by collecting documents
and in-depth interviews of the target group. The findings showed that the leadership of Sangha
governance in ASEAN community was found in 6 aspects consisted of 1) administrative leaders should
not have bias but holding the qualities of a successful businessman, 2) religious studies leaders should
contain great efforts and the right knowledge, 3) educational welfare leaders should hold welldevelopment
and friendly characters, 4) Buddhism propagation leader should hold Buddhist knowledge
and Buddha’s way of teaching, 5) public assistance leader should have Sapp?ya and P?pa? ikadhamma,
and 6) public welfare leader should follow Brahmavih?ra and Buddhist principles of service.
