Abstract

This study aimed to scan management theories applied to education and ascertain the
effectiveness of application in the management of problems by the academic deans in four (4) state universities
of Samar Island. Thirty (30) academic deans from the four state universities of Samar Island; UEP-Catarman,
Northern Samar, SSU-Catbalogan, Samar, NwSSU-Calbayog City, and ESSU-Borongan, Eastern Samar were
the sources of data.
This study employed the descriptive-correlational type of research design. The research-made
instrument was patterned from the study of Ramirez but was pre-tested for validation in the two external
campuses of UEP, which were not included in this study. Statistical tools such as frequency counts,
percentages, mean, ranking and multiple regression analysis were used to interpret and analyze the data.
The dean-respondents’ mostly applied theories were formal and collegial theories and ‘the least were
on subjective and ambiguity theories in defining, analyzing and solving management problems. As to the
effectiveness of the application of the most applied theories in the management of the problems, a majority
were “Satisfactory” in satisfying the execution of the deans’ routine functions, on extent of solution that
benefit the college, and on the extent of the outcomes that satisfy the needs, preferences or values of the
college. Analysis further showed that no significant relationship was observed between the theories applied
and the effectiveness of the theory application in terms of adequacy, equity and responsiveness.
In summary, the most preferred theories of management such as formal and collegial by the academic
deans of state universities in Samar Island were greatly influenced by the deans’ socio-demographic profile
and college profile; however, its effectiveness in management of problems concerning faculty, students,
curriculum and instruction was not significantly related to the applied theories.
