Abstract

This study aimed to identify the psychological well-being of single mothers and its relationship
with resilience and stress. This study also aimed to identify factors that could predict the psychological wellbeing
of single mothers. This study was conducted among 328 single mothers in Terengganu.
Questionnaires involving various instruments were used, such as the Ryff Psychological Well-being Scale
(Ryff, 1989), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (Connor & Davidson, 2003), Coping Strategies
Inventory (Carver, Scheier, & Weintraub, 1989), and the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (Levenstein,
Prantera, Varvo, Scribano, Berto, Luzi & Andreoli, 1993). The findings showed a modest level of
psychological well-being among these single mothers. They were also found to have high levels of
resilience, endurance, and stress. Meanwhile, regression analysis showed that resilience, endurance, and
stress were predictors of psychological well-being among single mothers. Therefore, the findings of this
study are expected to be the starting point for further studies on the empowerment of single mothers.
