Abstract

To design a nonelectric warming mattress for the prevention of and/or treatment of intraoperative
hypothermia that avoids hazards of the electrical operating warming mattresses that are in current use.
The new mattress comprises an outer case and an inner case. The outer case is composed of a polyester
material. The inner case is made of transparent plastic material containing fine granules of soda lime.
Attached to both sides of the inner case are two tubes: one tube is used for the introduction of CO2, and
the other tube is used for removing the waste gas. All components of the mattress are made of materials
that are antistatic, waterproof, and radiolucent. The mattress design obtained a patent from the UK Patent
Office (GB2541887 dated 06 March 2019). The nonelectric warming mattress generates heat without the
use of electricity. The heat is provided from the chemical reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas with the
granules of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The mattress can be adjusted to different sizes to suit the patient’s
body size and type of surgery.
