Abstract

This study explores the role ofhigher education institutes in enhancing the capacity of vulnerable communities in the urban fringe areas of Yogyakarta. It employed a qualitative method and drew on evidence from field observations and in-depth interviews with key informants selected by purposive sampling technique, namely five (5) people from the governmental agencies, eleven (11) from the campus managers, and six (6) from the communities around the campus. The data collected were first tested for their validity and reliability by the triangulation method and then processed and analyzed qualitatively through four stages, i.e., data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification. Findings suggest that higher education institutes take part in improving the vulnerable local communities in five aspects, starting from the economic, educational, health, legal, and up to religious-spiritual capacities
