Protection Investigation for Modern Electrical Generation Plant Using Differential Relay and LabVIEW Simulation Program

Abstract

This work presents a simulation of the main parts of power plant (generator, main transformer and unit transformer) which performed by using (StarSim) program and the simulation program (LabVIEW 2017) in order to investigate the protection system of the power plant. Firstly, power plant was simulated at normal operating condition and the values of ??(current, voltage and power) was calculated and compared with the actual values of the power plant to confirm the accuracy of the simulation program.

A unit of 193 MVA 15.75 kV generator, 220 MVA 15.75/400 kV main transformer, and 10 MVA 15.75/6.9 kV unit transformer (unit no.4 in new Al-Sadir gas power plant) in Baghdad city, which is a modern power plant in Iraq, was chosen as a case study in this work to study the protection system of main equipment of power plant against the internal faults using the differential protection.

Several fault types were simulated at different locations in the power plant to study different cases of the power plant under these fault types and record the values of (current, voltage and power) under fault condition to determine the appropriate relays setting. This is essential in case of modification of the power plant, depending on the new parameters of the new equipment.
