Perception Of Residential Households Towards Green Roof In Kuala Lumpur

Abstract

Green roof has been widely used in developed countries as a method to reduce the urban heat island effect among other environmental benefits. Many studies have shown that green roof provides wide range of benefits in improving environmental qualities especially in urban areas. However, the implementation of green roof in Malaysia has not been widely used especially on the landed houses. This paper studies the perception of terrace house residents on the implementation of green roof in Malaysia. Survey questionnaire was constructued to investigate the household’s knowledge on green roof, the factors that impede the implementation of green roof in Malaysia, and their suggestions to promote the usage of green roof on houses. The survey results showed that the respondents agreed on the benefits on green roof on the household, environement and society. However, the responds showed that the maintainence and upkeeping, apart from the cost of maintainence are the main reasons that hindered the implementation of green roof. The findings of this research will help to facilitate the promotion of green roof in among landed houses in Malaysia.
