Abstract

Now a day’s composite materials are replacing conventional materials because of superior
properties such as high strength, high stiffness, high corrosion resistance and high wear resistance
properties. Particular reinforced metal matrix composites are widely used in aerospace, automotive
and structural applications. Al7075 Aluminium alloy is an alloy which is easily available,
economical and light in weight. In the current research Al7075-Boron Carbide composites were
produced by using stir casting technique. The reinforcement particle Boron Carbide is varied in steps
of 0 %, 3%, 6 %, 9% and 12 % by weight. The Specimens were prepared as per ASTM standards.
The microstructure study of Al7075-Boron Carbide composites were carried out using Scanning
Electron Microscope. The compression and impact strength of Al7075-Boron Carbide composites
were carried out by using universal testing machine and impact testing machine. The SEM images of
Al7075-Boron Carbide composite shows the presence of Boron Carbide particles in the Al7075
matrix. Also uniform distribution of Boron Carbide particles is observed in the Al7075 matrix. The
compression strength and impact strength of Al7075-Boron Carbide composite is more than the
Al7075 alloy alone. The optimum value of compression and impact strength of Al7075-Boron
Carbide composite is obtained at 9 % of Boron Carbide.
