Abstract

Tonsillitis is one of the common upper respiratory tract infection among paediatric age group caused
by various pathogens. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches its therapeutics
from holistic point of view. Homoeopathy is one of the CAM. Homoeopathy consider this disease
results because of the Miasm in a person. While treating the cases adequate consideration is given for
the Miasm in selecting the medicine. Thirty cases were selected between the age group of 3-15 years
in both sexes, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria from the hospital outpatient care, hospital
inpatient care and rural epicentres of Sarada Krishna Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital,
Kanniyakumari, Tamilnadu, India. Diagnosis was made on their clinical presentations; totality was
constructed. The miasmatic interpretation is done on the basis of clinical presentation and prescribed
upon. All cases were regularly assessed before and after the treatment. It was graded from 0 to 4 as
per the severity. The cases were followed for at least a half year. Finally, paired “t” test was applied
for testing the significance. Among 30 cases, 27 patients showed noteworthy improvement. Twelve
patients showed mild and moderate improvement, marked and no improvement in 3 patients
respectively. The miasmatic study shows a predominance of Psoric miasm in 12 cases of 40%,
Tubercular miasm in 11 cases of 36.66% and Syphilitic miasm in 4 cases of 13.33% and Sycotic
miasm in 3 patients. In statistical analysis, calculated value is greater than the tabled value at 5%. So,
the study was statistically significant. Homoeopathic medicines can reduce the intensity of tonsillitis.
But miasmatic based medicines can remove the recurrence. Thus, tonsils are protected in children.
Hence the study indicates the significance of miasmatic based medicines in the recurrent tonsillitis
among children.
