Abstract

The current paper is designed to model the analysis of seepage and stability of Hemrin dam, which located in Iraq using SEEP/W and SLOPE/W which are sub products of finite element based software GEOSTUDIO. In the present paper the seepage of water was computed, pore water pressure and phreatic line was simulated for different elevations: minimum (92m.a.s.l), normal(104.5m.a.s.l) and maximum or flood (107.5m.a.s.l) design elevations. The input data given to the software are the dam geometry and its material properties. The flow net was created using SEEP/W software appearing phreatic line, velocity vectors, streamline, equipotential line. Also the seepage discharge (flux) and exit gradient are computed. In addition, analysis of slope stability in the Hemrin earth dam is of greater importance. By analytical approach, Spencer Method are used  to assess the stability of the downstream slope  and calculation  factor of safety for earth dam.

Theoretical seepage and analysis revealed, that a problem may occure in the downstream face of the dam lead to seepage failure when the water reservoir was connected to the flood level. In this research, a set of solutions checked by using the Geo-Studiosoftware  was suggested to solve this problem.
