Competency Development – A Literature Review

Abstract

Competency can be described as a specific group of abilities and skills which are to be
possessed by any individual in order to meet the challenges and obstacles in the way of achieving the
goals of an organisation. Cultivating these unique set of abilities and skills so as to achieve the goals
is called as Competency Development. A competency framework can be taken as knowledge, skill,
and attributes required for employees in an organization. Every individual’s role has its own group of
competencies required to perform the job in an effective manner. Those individuals who own the
abilities and skills are apprised and considered as the most valuable employees in any organisation.
This paper is a literature review paper that calibrates the components of Competency Development on
various domains. The study comprises of 20 literature reviews concentrating on Competency
Development and its components. Most of the studies have considered the following as the significant
components: flexibility, skill-based, engagement, supervising others, conflict resolution, emotional
intelligence, communication skills, manage performance, interviewing skills, team building,
delegation. This study is an attempt to ease literature review for the upcoming studies on Competency
Development
