Abstract

Using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) of 2016 and 2018, we study whether the use of internet for information crowds out the use of TV for information, and vice versa. Crowding out means when the use of internet increases for exogenous reasons that do not directly affect the use of TV, the probability of using TV decreases. Crowing out may happen when the two media have similar functions and people choose one of them to satisfy their needs. Crowing out may not happen if the two media have their own special functions and people want to use both of them to meet their needs. By employing instrumental variable techniques, we find that the use of internet for information and the use of TV for information crowd out each other.
