Abstract

EFL course book evaluation has been a focus in English language teaching research. Systemic Functional Linguistics pays attention to language usage function but also the culture context behind language use, which serves ideal theoretical foundation for course book evaluation. This essay evaluates the commonly used course book in Chinese colleges in the framework of this theory, and draws the conclusion that globally this course book is successful in reaching the target in terms of culture and language use function while certain lingering concern could be addressed in the future. This evaluation is supposed to provide insight for further evaluation of similar EFL course books in other countries
