Abstract

A critical care medical ventilator is generally employed to facilitate gaseous
exchange in the lungs when a patient is unable to do normal breathing. A simulator of
mechanical ventilation can provide a conducive environment for studying the mechanics of
breathing in laboratories and extending training to technicians associated with medical
ventilators. In this paper, a simulator based on multi-compartment mathematical model of lungs
subjected to controlled ventilation has been developed using SIMULINK. The simulator
permits the user to study the effect of peak inspiratory pressure (PIP), Positive End Expiratory
Pressure (PEEP), airway resistance (R), lung compliance (C), inspiration time, breaths per
minute as part of training students in the mechanics of breathing in laboratories. Sample results
are presented and discussed to make them understand the effect of different breathing
parameters. Simulator waveforms are analogous to the real artificial ventilator waveforms.
