Abstract

—Children do not have the ability for independent brushing until around age seven
or eight and may lack dental hygiene. The dental management of children is critical and put
pediatric dental surgeons under stress on examination. The main objective of this paper is to
control the dental projector lamp automatically, as it is difficult for the dental surgeons to
manually operate the lamp especially when the patient (child) frequently changes the position.
Finding the position (mouth) of a child where the light needs to be focused, is done with the
help of image processing technique and automated the movement control of the lamp with the
help of the Raspberry Pi microcontroller. During diagnosis, the children cannot stick to their
positions and shake their heads unknowingly, thereby the dental surgeons have to frequently
adjustment the lamp. The paper focuses on locating the mouth and imaging the whole mouth
and thus determining the position of the mouth, by a self-developed image-processing
algorithm. This information is sent to the microcontroller and converted into the signals
which can be detected by the motors that are employed to move the lamp, both the x-axis as
well on the y-axis. These automated lamps facilitate pediatric dental surgeons to focus on
their treatment despite disturbances caused by the patient.
