Abstract

Abstract: Tables are widely used in human daily life activities, which is often used to place books, stationery, personal computers, for eating, and more. Most of the study table existing in the market are prefabricated furniture which limits the user to change the setting or arrangement of the table. Therefore, the aim of this study is to design and produce a study table with the implementation of a self-assembling method known as “do it yourself” (DIY) concept. The design processes start with a market survey by distributing the questionnaire to residents of Batu Pahat, Johor. Subsequently, the data obtained from the questionnaire were translated into a problem statement that becomes a guideline and direction for design development processes. Numbers of sketches, ideations, and idea developments were created to fulfill the end-customer need as responded through a questionnaire (design and material of product). A design selection was done based on the summarized criteria from the questionnaire prior to the fabrication of the mock-up. Subsequently, the final design was transformed into a prototype. In this study, the prototype of a modular study table was made from a combination of materials namely pinewood as the main material, steel for legs, and jointing purposes with varnish, thinner and light vinyl stickers as finishing works. The modular study table fabricated in this study consists of few features such as a notice board, chair, foldable tabletop study table, and drawers. This modular study table is able to provide a remedy for a small-space residential area.
