Abstract

Traditional leadership has a wide range of responsibilities which includes making sure languages are preserved and can be used without alterations and distortions in communities, and that takes cognizance of the fact that education is at the forefront of modelling the way the communities express themselves linguistically.  The aim of the study was to investigate the role traditional leaders in preserving indigenous languages.  The used qualitative research method. The study found that social media, intermarriages, migration and the usage of slang in spoken languages affect the standard of indigenous languages that should be preserved. This study recommends that traditional leadership should develop and lead campaigns that promote self-identity and origin pride. This will help with making the schools to recognize the preservation of indigenous languages in education and intermarried people.
